We moved our family to Jacksonville from Portland, Oregon in August of last year, 2013. Our primary focus when choosing a place to live in Jacksonville was what school(s) our children, one ten-year old and one eight-year old, would attend. In Portland, our children had attended a K-12 Spanish Immersion magnet program and an inner city project-based curriculum focused charter school. Our family is in favor of school choice and the best school fit for the child's learning style.

Open Enrollment: What the research says and what you can do

Superintendent Nikolai Vitti's proposed Open Enrollment policy would allow all students in the district to sign up to attend any school with available space in the district, regardless of their zoned "home" school.

This issue has generated a lot of conversation in the community. Our research team set out to learn all they could about similar Open Enrollment policies throughout the state of Florida and across the country.

A lot to do and learn at the Family Expo

On March 8, I had the pleasure of bringing my 8 year old daughter to the Family Expo at the Jacksonville Fairgounds hosted by Jax4Kids.com and Duval County Public Schools. Booths were set up indoors by various local vendors/organizations like Rebounderz, i9 Sports, YMCA, DCPS Parent Academy, and our very own Jacksonville Public Education Fund, to name a few.
