In an effort to connect volunteers wanting to have a direct impact in the lives of our children, the Jacksonville Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section and the D.W. Perkins Bar Association have partnered with the Jacksonville Public Education Fund and Duval County Public Schools to create a mentoring program that connects students from Ribault High School to young lawyers. The idea grew out of a site visit to The Leadership Academies at Eugene Butler spearheaded by two of our board members - the Honorable Judge Brian Davis and Ricardo Bedoya - to engage members of several of Jacksonville’s Bar associations in learning more about the progress and needs of Duval County Public Schools.

It’s important to recognize the challenges that our students have to overcome in schools and beyond. That’s why the Jacksonville Public Education Fund continues to elevate the voices of those who work directly with students. Erica Rickey, City Year Team Leader at Smart Pope Livingston Elementary shares how corp members walk in the moccasins of students on a daily basis.

Bipartisan win for kids in post-NCLB federal education bill

President Barack Obama signed last week a bill to replace the much-maligned No Child Left Behind act. Formally referred to as the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), the law was supported by a strong bipartisan majority in both the House and Senate.
