New Research from Germany Shows Access = Opportunity
A recent study from Germany reveals just how powerful access to reading materials can be for children from low-income families. The study gave 11-12-year-olds from disadvantaged households an e-book reader, providing them with access to a digital library of over 1,000 age-appropriate books. The goal was to encourage reading and see if it could improve academic performance. The results were impressive. Children who received the e-book readers read more frequently and saw improvements in both their reading comprehension and math skills. Additionally, these children experienced positive effects on their socio-emotional well-being, such as increased confidence and better relationships with peers.
This study shows that providing kids with the right resources can open doors for their academic success and personal growth. Here in Jacksonville, we're working to achieve similar goals. Jacksonville Public Education Fund partners with and supports organizations who are focused on increasing access to reading materials for students who need them most, such as READ USA, Kids Hope Alliance, Communities in Schools, Boys & Girls Club, and Mayor Deegan’s River City Readers. Additionally, the Jacksonville Civic Council has been a key player in advancing digital literacy as well as early childhood education through its sprint program, ensuring that students not only gain access to physical books but also have the digital skills needed to navigate today’s learning environment. Expanding access to books and fostering a love for reading, alongside promoting digital literacy, is helping our community close the achievement gap and build a brighter future for our kids.
